Tips on choosing a reliable marriage agency

For many single Western men the idea of bringing a young beautiful wife from Russian or Ukraine is really alluring. But proceed with caution.

“My personal experience with most marriage agencies it that both the agencies and the women were not legitimate. In fact, most were scams” says Brett Ousley , an American who came to Russia and later Ukraine to find a wife some 4 years ago. Now he owns and manages a marriage agency in Kiev. So how to determine if an agency is legitimate?

1. Take a look at the site information – type http://whois.sc/AGENCYNAME.com

• You will see the date the site was created: it takes time to collect a database of marriage-minded women, a site registered two months ago cannot have a database with huge number of profiles.
• Owner’s name should be the same as advertised on the site.
• Run from agencies hosted on free servers, like http://AGENCYNAME.tripod.com

2. Make sure the agency’s office exist.

• See if you can easily find complete contact information, especially physical address and phone number.
• Email the manager about some trifle question and see when you get response.
• Call the manager/owner – one long-distance call will save you months of wasted time and hundreds of dollars.

3. Make sure the ladies exist.

• Use mail forwarding offered by the agency but also ask the lady and/or agency for postal address. Agency’s refusal to provide contact information without a good reason is a red flag. Send her a small gift (CD with your favorite music, map of your city, illustrated book about your country) and check if she receives it.
• Give her a phone call. If she does not speak English just say hello and some simple phrases, do not expect a meaningful first conversation though – she might be so nervous that she forgets all English words she learnt at school.
• Ask agency to scan lady’s letters saying that once they might become of personal importance to you.
• Do not correspond for years, visit and see her in person!
